Kettle Island truck route – a closer look

January 25th, 2009 Posted in Maps

We’ve identified on Google Maps a number of communities, institutions, and facilities that would be directly impacted by the Kettle Island truck route.

This map is a work in progress, so please let us know if you can help us refine it. It would be ideal if you could provide:

1) Name of the impacted institution, school, facility, etc.
2) Street address
3) Website

It is best viewed in View Larger Map format, where you can zoom in and scroll across the entire length of the corridor, but see below for a preview.

  1. Josee Mondoux Says:

    For your map :

There are 2 schools located right near the Cite Collegiale. Ecole primaire catholique Montford will open its doors in September 2009 (right across from la Cite) and Ecole Secondaire Samuel Genest, directly behind the new Montfort school.

One school near King Edward Ave. If you do a similar Google search for schools near King Edward Ave. you will only find one Ottawa city school compared to over 11 near the Aviation Parkway. Is it possible that they didn’t build any schools in the area because of the proximity to a major truck route?

To help me update the map, it would be very helpful if you could provide:

    1) Name of the institution, school, facility, etc.
    2) Street Address
    3) Website

    Thanks for your feedback!

  4. Alice Says:

ccredico, I added the list of schools to the “recent comments” yesterday afternoon along with some statistics on kids & health hazards. I also have a google map with all the names & locations I just didn’t know how to send the image to this site.

    Hi,
Below are some additional elements you should add to your map.

    1. Ken Steele Park (intersection Ogilvie and Aviation): football field, playground, woods, boardwalk over wetland)

    2. Dense housing areas:
    (a) between Cummings and Aviation,
    (b) along Rainsford Ave (very close to Aviation)
    (c) Skyway Street area (again, very close to Aviation)

    3. Whiterock Park between Matheson Rd. and Aviation Parkway (playground, basketball courts, skating, woods)

    4. Dr. John Hopps Park in the bend of Den Haag: playground, soccer field, tennis courts (this is behind and below the sports fields of Samuel Genest High School, which is marked).

    5. Samuel Genest High School (French Catholic Schoool Board) on Carson Road near La Cité Collégiale (there is an access issue with students crossing Aviation Parkway on foot at “La Cité” private — see below).

    6. New elementary school nearly completed, French Catholic School Board, I think) on Den Haag (in what appears as woods between Samuel Genest and La Cité Collégiale on the image in Google Maps.

    7. Soccer field behind La Cité Collégiale (this is distinct from the one in Dr John Hopps Park above)

    8. The intersection of Aviation Parkway and “La Cité” (the access to Cité Collégiale and its parking lots). This intersection is not a great problem presently as the traffic volume on Aviation is light at the times when students and faculty are arriving and leaving the college. But if Aviation became a busy truck and commuting route, a traffic signal would be needed. In turn, trucks decelerating and accelerating at the intersection would greatly add to noise and air pollution. The intersection is just behind Our Lady of Mt Carmel Elementary and near housing areas on both sides of Aviation.

By the way, Ottawa city cycling maps shows “La Cité” as part of an E-W route allowing circulation from and towards downtown and Vanier. It is the only one in the area that doesn’t use Montreal Road or Ogilvie. Crossing Aviation Parkway to get dwn to Rainsford Avenue is already a problem if you’re out with your kids; it would become impossible if Aviation Pkwy becomes a bridge access.

This intersection (La Cité at Aviation Pkwy) is one of the forgotten impacts — and major costs — of the Kettle Island access corridor. It’s an example of what is wrong with the first stage of the environmental impact study.

Feel free to contact me if you need a hand locating these items.

    Further to my previous comment:
Oops, excuse me! I see that Samuel Genest HS is already on your map and that Josée Mondoux has identified the new elementary school on Den Haag as the École primaire Montfort.

  7. ccredico Says:

Alice – I’ve incorporated all of the schools that you’ve listed. But if you have additional landmarks identified on your map, please post it on the site. From your Google map, click on the Link button in the top right corner of the map, and copy and paste the link into a comment on this site. Thanks.

    There’s a church on Oglivie / Aviation Parkway: Epiphany Anglican Church‎ @ 1290 Ogilvie Road, Gloucester, ON K1J 1H5, Canada‎.

What about businesses affected? The Pizza-Hut and Pepper Garden restaurants (NW corner of Montreal Rd / Aviation Pwk) sit pretty close to or on what would be a westbound turning lane.

  9. Alice Says:

You show a Sports Field near Den Haag Drive, you should also show that between the football field and the road is a large children’s playground beside Den Haag Drive. In the summer it is always busy.

  10. Alice Says:

    Childcare centres:
    1. CMHC has a childcare centre – Garderie Sunflower Coopérative (700 Montreal Road)
    2. Centre Educatif Brin De Soleil Inc‎. 641 Sladen Avenue Ottawa

  12. ccredico Says:

Thanks for the great feedback. I’ll be out of town for a few days on business, but will update the map later this week. In the mean time, keep sending me your updates and I’ll do my best to incorporate them.

  13. Charles Siegel Says:

Cité Collégiale also has a childcare centre. I don’t know its name but will try to find out.

I believe the playground mentioned by Alice mentioned by Alice on Den Haag is part of Dr. John Hopps Park.

  14. Cynthia B Says:

Our Lady of Mount Carmel school backs right onto the Aviation Parkway and the students run along the parkway during gym class. I have witnessed this on several occasions. This activity would certainly be curtailed if the parkway becomes a truck route.

  15. Charles Siegel Says:

I put my suggestions for additions to ccredico’s map on another (Google) map called “Additions to Kettle Island, a closer look”, which is visible at:

    http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&t=h&hl=en&source=embed&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=105104206736940990889.0004616da0db8d6de1565

(I’ve added two more city parks and polygons covering some high-density neighborhoods to the west of the Aviation Parkway to my list of suggested additions.)

You can visualize the additional items together with ccredico’s “Kettle Island…” map using your Google maps account (you’ll need to save both to “my maps”).

Hope this is useful to somebody.

  16. Elaine Morest Says:

First hand, thank you for staging important areas alongside the “prefered Kettle Island route”.

I would like to add an already paved recreational bike pathway called Route Verte (clearly identified by a road sign) starting at the intersection of Avenue du Golf and proposed Montee Paiement extension in Gatineau.

Talking about nonsense…this path had been cleared of snow all winter long and “vaccumed and washed” summer spring and fall.

  17. ccredico Says:

I’ve updated the map to incorporate your feedback. Thanks again for all your input. Let me know if you have any more comments, additions, or corrections.
